Microsoft will phase out security updates for Windows 10 on Oct. 14, the company announced Tuesday, offering users three paths to keep their systems protected.

Beginning in July, a setup wizard will guide customers through Extended Security Updates (ESU) enrollment. Those seeking coverage beyond the October cutoff can:

1. Sync system backups to OneDrive via the built-in Windows Backup tool;

2. Redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points for one year of updates; or

3. Purchase ESU for $30, valid through Oct. 13, 2026 (businesses may buy up to three additional years).

With Windows 10 still running on over 53 per cent of PCs worldwide as of May 2025, millions face unprotected systems unless they upgrade or enroll in ESU. The free backup option relies on OneDrive storage: Microsoft accounts include 5 GB at no charge, but larger backups could require a $2 monthly plan for 100 GB—still cheaper than the $30 ESU fee.

Windows 10 launched in July 2015 and has remained dominant despite Windows 11’s release, as compatibility requirements and other changes delayed mass adoption of the successor OS.

Business analysts note that the backup route offers a zero-cost alternative for individual users, provided they manage storage limits carefully. But some users may find the OneDrive upgrade requirement inconvenient.

Security experts urge consumers to prepare now. Those who neither back up nor enroll may be left without patches for future threats. Upgrading to Windows 11 or migrating to alternative platforms remains the final solution for long-term support.
